Jacob shinnied up the post with that special effortless
agility only young boys are capable of. Reaching the top, he craned his neck to
get a better view. Yep, this was the right one.
With considerable effort, he began removing the bolts holding
the heavy street sign in place. He wasn’t sure why it was so important but if
Grandpa said it was, Jacob had no reason to doubt the old man’s wisdom.
“Take pride in what you do, boy….always take pride.” He
still wasn’t quite sure this was what Grandpa meant but he kept at what he was
doing…proudly.

Hi,
ReplyDeleteNot fair, Began reading the story, and it ends. NOoooo. Will there be a follow-up later, or was this meant to be a tantalizing tease of a read? Good job!
It is for a flash fiction challenge with a 100-word limit. sorry, that's all there is
ReplyDeleteJeffrey Hollar - a man who takes pride in his writing! Another great take on a prompt that made me smile :-)
ReplyDeleteHa very funny love it.
ReplyDeletegreat
ReplyDeleteAh Jeffrey, thank you for the smile. Great voice in this and nicely written!
ReplyDeleteInspired! Love the innocence and depth, at the same time!
ReplyDeleteA clever take on the prompt.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what Grandpa's reaction will be?
Splendid!! Somehow this speaks to me as the potential "Once Upon a Time" in a modern day Horatio Algier story - a rags to riches that begins in accidental crime, ends in comfort with an honest soul, integrity in tact, and a determination to do what's right no matter what. Great work - another fabulous Visual Dare!
ReplyDeletehahaha "take pride" made me laugh, great flash for the visual as always
